WHAT the heck is PIYO?

I am Ga-Ga over PiYO. Totally Ga-Ga. I think it is the Triathlete’s dream come true. I think it completes our training table’s PIE chart (if you know what I mean!) 🙂 It is the missing link. And “yes”, I have the honor to share it with whomever wishes to better themselves, or their sport, or whatever their goal may be! You can find the product at; www.beachbodycoach.com/wandabamberger

Furthermore, it has changed my body, the way I train everyday, and the way I feel. I have coupled it with Shakeology as I love the fact that I get a supercharged dose of superfoods once a day. It has curbed my cravings, increased my energy, and helpes me feel better. But Let’s Answer Some of Your Big Questions. What the heck is PiYO?

*WHAT– PiYO is a combination of Pilates and Yoga. It is fast moving, it encompasses all the muscle groups. It is STRENGTH and FLEXIBLITY. It is a series of workouts on DVD’s, and included is a calendar which tells you which session to complete each day. The time frame is 60 days, and the sessions range from 20 minutes- 35 minutes (there are a few 45 minute ones).

*WHY- To change your body. To get a LOT done in a tiny amount of time. There are some main components which make it SO awesome.

*MAIN COMPONENTS ARE:

1. The MUSCLES it TARGETS in both STRENGTH and STRETCHING: CORE and TRICEPS: Holy moly- totally targets these muscles, which are CRUCIAL for triathletes, swimmers. LATERAL MOVEMENTS; forward plane athletes (those who run, swim, bike, train in only forward plane) NEED all the lateral movements incorporated in PiYO. It has CHANGED the way I Mountain Bike, the way I SWIM, and the way I RUN. OH, and it’s chiseled over 2 inches from my waist!

2. TIME– it is so hard to make time for the important strength and flexibility portions or our training schedule. This is a small time commitment 6 days a week, that you can do when it is convenient for YOU. DVD’s people!

3. FLEXIBILITY: it will quickly hone in on your tight spots. You have no choice but to feel this!! So if you have tight hip flexors, ITB, shoulders, etc you will immediately start feeling how this stretches you out. What does a more limber body do???? It RACES FASTER. It FEELS better. It is FLUID.

That’s the short of PiYO. I tried it. I do it. I’m committed to it. I LOVE it.

Here, also, is a video telling you a little bit about the Vegan Chocolate SHAKEOLOGY. There are other awesome flavors, but I prefer the two vegan options; Chocolate or Tropical Strawberry http://beachbodycoach.com/esuite/home/wandabamberger?bctid=1701185460001

70.3 IRONMAN…..It costs HOW MUCH?

I was just lamenting with Stephen how much these 70.3 Ironmans cost! They are clear up to around the $300.00 mark! “My goodness!! They really need to get these prices down a bit! It’s outrageous,” I complained.

Well, then we started talking. Stephen said the most interesting thing. He said, “I think it’s a lot of bang for the buck, actually.” He went on to say that it’s a race entry, yes, but it’s much more than that. It’s a goal that you have, usually for at least six months. So, it’s something to work towards!

I quickly started thinking about what he said and turned my thoughts around! He was right! For me, when I sign up for a 70.3 (and I’ve done 9 of these bad boys now), it is my big bright orange carrot! Dangling there, so attainable, and so motivational. It get’s me out of bed and out on the mountain to train, especially on those less than ideal days; the days I’ve stayed up late tending my sick child….the days that are cold, or windy, or snowy, or too hot! On vacations, instead of eating and drinking (solely), there is also a healthy dose of exercise going on. Those exercise sessions get me in on the best part of the day too! I get up early and go run around the city or up in the mountains. I might go swim in the beautiful lake, or bike up into the neighborhoods that I normally would never have seen. I see the sun rise above Central Park.  I feel the rain on my face along the country roads. It’s a great way to start the day (or finish it!).

The races also take us to amazing places where we vacation! Hawaii, Panama, Pays d’ aix France, Maui, California, southern Utah, Wisconsin, Idaho…all over. I love it! Even the nearby little local races, which have a much smaller entry fee, result in the best ever sites, and the most wonderful people to meet.

That’s another thing! Since I started going to the 70.3 races, I’ve met people that have become my BEST friends. That is worth all the money in the world!

That entry fee could just as easily be spent (squandered) in many other ways! I could buy one of those leather Louis Vuitton purses…probably add another decimal point or two on though. Then, I could walk around advertising their logo. Personally, I don’t get much satisfaction out of that. I could go out to a really fancy dinner….I could probably pay for a few months of direct TV….I could easily spend that much on a gym membership, or some snazzy gifts…I could get a big awesome tattoo or go to the salon a couple times (naaa, I prefer Great Clips!). Anyways, point is, maybe that $300 is a pretty good deal. When I cross the finish line, I always give myself a little hug. I usually say something like this; “Good job, Wanda. I’m proud of you. You did it. You did it.” There are NOT many times in my life when I say such a nice thing to myself:) That alone is worth the money.

Alrighty….this is basic basic around us triathletes, but I get this question ALL the time from friends and newbies! So, let’s clear it up a bit. What are the distances and disciplines of Triathlon?

A Triathlon consists of 3 disciplines; Swim, Bike, Run

Unless it is a unique race, the order is always the same. The reason is for safety. The swim is the most dangerous, and thus the organizers want the athletes to be freshest for the swim. Following the swim, we do the bike, and then end with the run.

What are the distances? The distances are as follows;

SPRINT distance is a 750 meter swim, 13 mile bike, and 3.1 mile run

OLYMPIC distance is a 1500 meter swim, 26 mile bike, and 6.2 mile run

70.3 (or HALF IRONMAN) distance is a 1.2 mile swim, 56 mile bike, and 13.1 mile run

IRONMAN distance is a 2.4 mile swim, 112 mile bike, and 26.2 mile run

Often, I will see a varying swim distance for pool sprint tri’s- this is most often because of the number of lap lanes it has, and how difficult the organizers want to make it. So sometimes the swim is 300 yards, or 450, or whatever works! Usually, if the sprint tri is in open water (a lake or ocean or murky pond), then it is usually 750 meters.RT0334_06360
